33:56

إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ وَمَلَـٰٓئِكَتَهُۥ يُصَلُّونَ عَلَى ٱلنَّبِىِّ ۚ يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ صَلُّوا۟ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلِّمُوا۟ تَسْلِيمًا

inna l-laha wamalāikatahu yuṣallūna ʿalā l-nabiyi yāayyuhā alladhīna āmanū ṣallū ʿalayhi wasallimū taslīman

Indeed, Allāh confers blessing upon the Prophet, and His angels [ask Him to do so]. O you who have believed, ask [Allāh to confer] blessing upon him and ask [Allāh to grant him] peace.

Allâh sends His Salât (Graces, Honours, Blessings, Mercy) on the Prophet (Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم), and also His angels (ask Allâh to bless and forgive him). O you who believe! Send your Salât on (ask Allâh to bless) him (Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم), and (you should) greet (salute) him with the Islâmic way of greeting (salutation i.e. As-Salâmu ‘Alaikum ).

What is The verse of salawat about?

Verse 56 of Surah Al-Ahzab is the verse that commands the salawat: "Allah and His angels send blessings upon the Prophet. O you who believe, send blessings upon him and greet him with peace." It is the basis for saying "sallallahu alayhi wa sallam" after the Prophet’s name, for the salawat in the tashahhud of every prayer, and for the extra salawat recommended on Fridays. The verse is striking because it describes Allah Himself doing what He then asks the believers to do, which is why the scholars count sending blessings on the Prophet ﷺ among the most beloved acts of worship.

When is it recited?

  • Increased on Fridays: "Increase your blessings upon me on Friday."(Sunan Abi Dawud 1047, graded sahih by al-Albani)
  • Whenever the Prophet ﷺ is mentioned, and in the tashahhud of every prayer.
