What is "Hearts find rest in the remembrance of Allah" about?

Verse 28 of Surah Ar-Ra’d describes those who believe and whose hearts find rest in the remembrance of Allah, then states the principle: "Surely, in the remembrance of Allah do hearts find rest." The word used, tatma’innu, is settling after disturbance, the way water settles after being stirred. The verse does not promise that life becomes easy; it says the heart can be at peace within it. Dhikr here includes the Quran itself, which earlier in the surah is called a reminder, as well as the phrases of remembrance. It is one of the most shared verses in the Quran, and the first verse many people learn about anxiety and peace.

When is it recited?

  • Quoted in times of anxiety and restlessness, and as a reason for daily dhikr.
