What is Rabbana atina fid-dunya hasanah about?

Verse 201 of Surah Al-Baqarah contains the most frequently recited dua in the Quran: "Our Lord, give us good in this world and good in the Hereafter, and protect us from the punishment of the Fire." It follows a verse describing people who ask only for this world, and it describes the believers who ask for both. The word hasanah, "good", is left open on purpose; commentators include health, provision, a righteous spouse and knowledge in this world, and Paradise and safety from the Fire in the next. The Prophet ﷺ made this dua more than any other, which is why it closes so many gatherings and prayers.

When is it recited?

  • The dua the Prophet ﷺ made most often.(Sahih al-Bukhari 4522; Sahih Muslim 2690)
  • Between the Yemeni corner and the Black Stone during tawaf, and at the end of gatherings and prayers.
