21:83

۞ وَأَيُّوبَ إِذْ نَادَىٰ رَبَّهُۥٓ أَنِّى مَسَّنِىَ ٱلضُّرُّ وَأَنتَ أَرْحَمُ ٱلرَّٰحِمِينَ

wa-ayyūba idh nādā rabbahu annī massaniya l-ḍuru wa-anta arḥamu l-rāḥimīna

And [mention] Job, when he called to his Lord, "Indeed, adversity has touched me, and You are the most merciful of the merciful."

What is The dua of Prophet Ayyub about?

Verse 83 of Surah Al-Anbiya records the dua of Prophet Ayyub after years of illness and loss: "Harm has touched me, and You are the most merciful of the merciful." He does not ask for anything directly. He describes his state and describes Allah, and leaves the request unspoken out of adab, good manners with Allah. The next verse gives the answer: Allah responded, removed his affliction, and restored his family and more. The dua is a model of patience that is not silence; it is taking the pain to the One who can remove it. It is recited by the sick and by those caring for them.

When is it recited?

  • During illness and hardship, and when making dua for someone who is sick.
