3:173

ٱلَّذِينَ قَالَ لَهُمُ ٱلنَّاسُ إِنَّ ٱلنَّاسَ قَدْ جَمَعُوا۟ لَكُمْ فَٱخْشَوْهُمْ فَزَادَهُمْ إِيمَـٰنًا وَقَالُوا۟ حَسْبُنَا ٱللَّهُ وَنِعْمَ ٱلْوَكِيلُ

alladhīna qāla lahumu l-nāsu inna l-nāsa qad jamaʿū lakum fa-ikh'shawhum fazādahum īmānan waqālū ḥasbunā l-lahu waniʿ'ma l-wakīlu

Those to whom people [i.e., hypocrites] said, "Indeed, the people have gathered against you, so fear them." But it [merely] increased them in faith, and they said, "Sufficient for us is Allāh, and [He is] the best Disposer of affairs."

Those whose faith only increased when people said, ‘Fear your enemy: they have amassed a great army against you,’ and who replied, ‘God is enough for us: He is the best protector,’

Those (i.e. believers) unto whom the people (hypocrites) said, "Verily, the people (pagans) have gathered against you (a great army), therefore, fear them." But it (only) increased them in Faith, and they said: "Allâh (Alone) is Sufficient for us, and He is the Best Disposer of affairs (for us)."

What is Hasbunallahu wa ni’mal wakil about?

Verse 173 of Surah Ali ’Imran describes the believers after the battle of Uhud. People came to frighten them, saying that the enemy had gathered a great army against them. Instead of fear, the warning only increased their faith, and they said "Hasbunallahu wa ni’mal wakil": Allah is enough for us, and He is the best one to rely on. The next verse records the result: they returned with favour and bounty from Allah, and no harm touched them. The phrase has become the believer’s response to any threat or anxiety, and it is the same phrase Ibrahim said when he was thrown into the fire.

When is it recited?

  • Said by Ibrahim when he was thrown into the fire, and by the Prophet ﷺ when told that the enemy had gathered against him.(Sahih al-Bukhari 4563)
  • In times of fear, loss or anxiety, and in the morning and evening adhkar.
