40:60

وَقَالَ رَبُّكُمُ ٱدْعُونِىٓ أَسْتَجِبْ لَكُمْ ۚ إِنَّ ٱلَّذِينَ يَسْتَكْبِرُونَ عَنْ عِبَادَتِى سَيَدْخُلُونَ جَهَنَّمَ دَاخِرِينَ

waqāla rabbukumu id'ʿūnī astajib lakum inna alladhīna yastakbirūna ʿan ʿibādatī sayadkhulūna jahannama dākhirīna

And your Lord says, "Call upon Me; I will respond to you." Indeed, those who disdain My worship will enter Hell [rendered] contemptible.

What is "Call upon Me; I will respond to you" about?

Verse 60 of Surah Ghafir is the verse of dua: "Your Lord says, call upon Me and I will respond to you." The verse continues with a warning for those too proud to worship Allah, which shows that dua is itself an act of worship and not merely a request. The Prophet ﷺ said that dua is worship and then recited this verse. Scholars explain that the response takes one of three forms: the thing asked for is given, or a harm is averted instead, or the reward is kept for the Hereafter. The verse is the shortest answer to the question of whether Allah hears.
