What is Fa-bi-ayyi ala’i rabbikuma tukadhdhiban about?

Verse 13 of Surah Ar-Rahman is the first appearance of the question that gives the surah its rhythm: "Then which of the favours of your Lord will you deny?" It is repeated thirty-one times, after each description of a blessing, from the sun and the moon to the fruits of Paradise. The dual form, rabbikuma, "your Lord" addressed to two, speaks to both humans and jinn. The Prophet ﷺ said that the jinn gave a better response than people when they heard it, saying after each repetition: "We deny none of Your favours, our Lord, and to You is all praise." The verse is the Quran’s way of turning a list of blessings into a conversation.

When is it recited?

  • Answered with "La bi-shay’in min ni’amika rabbana nukadhdhib, fa-lakal hamd", as the jinn did.(Jami’ at-Tirmidhi 3291, graded hasan by al-Albani)
