Al-Fatihah opens the Quran with praise of Allah and a direct plea for guidance to the straight path. Its seven verses form the core supplication of a Muslim's life and summarize the relationship between servant and Lord: praise, worship, and the request for guidance.
Al-Fatihah (الفاتحة) means "The Opening" in English. It is chapter 1 of the Holy Quran.
Surah Al-Fatihah has 7 verses (ayat). It appears on page 1 of the mushaf.
Surah Al-Fatihah is a Makki surah, revealed in Makkah before the Prophet's ﷺ migration to Madinah.
Al-Fatihah is recited in every unit (rak'ah) of the five daily prayers, and the Prophet ﷺ described it as the greatest surah in the Quran (Sahih al-Bukhari). It is also called As-Sab' al-Mathani — the seven oft-repeated verses.
