The definite article "ال" (al) is attached to the beginning of nouns to make them definite, similar to "the" in English.

Always written attached to the word

The "ل" assimilates with "sun letters" (الحروف الشمسية)

Remains unchanged with "moon letters" (الحروف القمرية)
