Demonstrative pronouns point to something near or far.

Near (this/these):

  • هَـٰذَا (hādhā) - this (masculine)
  • هَـٰذِهِ (hādhihi) - this (feminine)
  • هَـٰؤُلَاءِ (hā'ulā'i) - these (plural)

    • Far (that/those):

  • ذَٰلِكَ (dhālika) - that (masculine)
  • تِلْكَ (tilka) - that (feminine)
  • أُولَـٰئِكَ (ulā'ika) - those (plural)

    • Quranic Examples

    ذَٰلِكَ ٱلْكِتَـٰبُ لَا رَيْبَ فِيهِ

    2:2

    Dhālika al-kitābu lā rayba fīh

    أُولَـٰئِكَ عَلَىٰ هُدًى مِّن رَّبِّهِمْ

    2:5

    Ulā'ika ʿalā hudan min rabbihim

    Those are upon guidance from their Lord
