Ash-Shams opens with eleven oaths — by the sun, the moon, the day, the night, the sky, the earth, and the soul — building to one truth: he has succeeded who purifies his soul, and he has failed who corrupts it (91:9–10). Thamud stands as the warning: they hamstrung the she-camel, and their Lord leveled them.
