العلق
بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ
ٱقْرَأْ بِٱسْمِ رَبِّكَ ٱلَّذِى خَلَقَ
خَلَقَ ٱلْإِنسَـٰنَ مِنْ عَلَقٍ
ٱقْرَأْ وَرَبُّكَ ٱلْأَكْرَمُ
ٱلَّذِى عَلَّمَ بِٱلْقَلَمِ
عَلَّمَ ٱلْإِنسَـٰنَ مَا لَمْ يَعْلَمْ
كَلَّآ إِنَّ ٱلْإِنسَـٰنَ لَيَطْغَىٰٓ
أَن رَّءَاهُ ٱسْتَغْنَىٰٓ
إِنَّ إِلَىٰ رَبِّكَ ٱلرُّجْعَىٰٓ
أَرَءَيْتَ ٱلَّذِى يَنْهَىٰ
عَبْدًا إِذَا صَلَّىٰٓ
أَرَءَيْتَ إِن كَانَ عَلَى ٱلْهُدَىٰٓ
أَوْ أَمَرَ بِٱلتَّقْوَىٰٓ
أَرَءَيْتَ إِن كَذَّبَ وَتَوَلَّىٰٓ
أَلَمْ يَعْلَم بِأَنَّ ٱللَّهَ يَرَىٰ
كَلَّا لَئِن لَّمْ يَنتَهِ لَنَسْفَعًۢا بِٱلنَّاصِيَةِ
نَاصِيَةٍ كَـٰذِبَةٍ خَاطِئَةٍ
فَلْيَدْعُ نَادِيَهُۥ
سَنَدْعُ ٱلزَّبَانِيَةَ
كَلَّا لَا تُطِعْهُ وَٱسْجُدْ وَٱقْتَرِب ۩
Al-'Alaq contains the first words of the Quran ever revealed, brought by Jibril to the Prophet ﷺ in the cave of Hira: 'Read in the name of your Lord who created — created man from a clinging substance. Read, and your Lord is the most Generous, who taught by the pen.' It then warns the man who forbids a servant when he prays, and closes: prostrate and draw near.
Al-'Alaq (العلق) means "The Clinging Substance" in English. It is chapter 96 of the Holy Quran.
Surah Al-'Alaq has 19 verses (ayat). It appears on pages 597 to 597 of the mushaf.
Surah Al-'Alaq is a Madani surah, revealed in Madinah after the Prophet's ﷺ migration.
