Al-'Alaq contains the first words of the Quran ever revealed, brought by Jibril to the Prophet ﷺ in the cave of Hira: 'Read in the name of your Lord who created — created man from a clinging substance. Read, and your Lord is the most Generous, who taught by the pen.' It then warns the man who forbids a servant when he prays, and closes: prostrate and draw near.
Al-'Alaq (العلق) means "The Clinging Substance" in English. It is chapter 96 of the Holy Quran.
Surah Al-'Alaq has 19 verses (ayat). It appears on page 597 of the mushaf.
Surah Al-'Alaq is a Makki surah, revealed in Makkah before the Prophet's ﷺ migration to Madinah.
